2022 CITY BUDGET & SPEED CUSHIONS —At tomorrow's Oshawa Council virtual meeting (Fri Nov 12th), starting at 9:30 a.m. Staff will be presenting the proposed 2022 City Budget. There will be 3 subsequent Friday meetings Nov 26th, Dec 3rd and Dec 10th to review the Capital and Operating Budgets for approval.
Naturally there will be several priority projects, asset upgrades and replacements needing funding. Also, it seems that many at the City are advocating for new staff hires. I am interested in keeping taxes down, but at the same time especially keen on improving the City parks and trails, ensuring the economic development department has the tools to encourage new business growth and retaining local businesses in Oshawa.
But, I have my eye on something right now that I am looking for indications of support:-
When so many residents are rightfully concerned about ROAD SAFETY, consider the increasing number of road fatalities and serious accidents occurring across the City in the past several months, I am hopeful new traffic calming measures can be implemented, and one that other municipalities have found success with are SPEED CUSHIONS.
They can be installed temporarily, and do not interfere with emergency vehicle traffic like speed bumps.
The City of Hamilton began installing them a few years ago and now it has many. They must be working, since the plan for Hamilton's 2022 budget, as this article highlights, has them ordering at least a dozen more.
To have speed cushions added to Oshawa's arsenal of traffic calming measures, funds will need to be allocated in the 2022 budget. Of the members of Council I've spoken with so far, some are in favour, some not. Ultimately, imo it should be a decision up to the residents on the street who will be impacted....
However, at this point I would like to hear from Oshawa residents.
What is your position, for or against speed cushions?
