On Monday Nov 8, 2021 the Development Services Committee approved the addition of the names George Kingsland, Ted Marks, Marshall McConkey and Valentine to the City’s Street Name Reserve List in accordance with the Council approved Street Naming Policy in Memory and Honour of the War Dead and War Veterans.
Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of attending the War Veterans Naming Event at Oshawa's Cenotaph with Mayor Carter, Deputy Mayor Chapman, Development Services Committee Chair Tito-Dante Marimpietri, and Councillors Jane Hurst and Bradley Marks.
All being honoured are war dead from Oshawa who served in the Second World War.
I met the family of War Veteran Marshall McConkey, who died in France in 1944. The family kindly brought along the photos and newspaper clipping below. It will be interesting to see if we can trace a common ancestor.
Yes, Ted (Edward) Marks) who is honored with a street name is related to Councillor Bradley Marks, his great uncle...and a pilot who was reported missing in action in 1943.
The Valentine name is to honor two Oshawa brothers, Frank and Jack Valentine.
