Just read the 8 part tweet Dr. Theresa Tam Canada's Chief Public Health Officer posted on Twitter a short while ago:
Two days ago, Friday Mar 13th, Council members were called for a Special meeting. A few minutes after being seated in the Council Chamber we were handed a just-printed, 6-page staff report. Wrestling with the recommendations in it, some of us had more questions than others. I voted against closing Oshawa rec and community centres and against cancelling the next City Council meeting. At the time I was not comfortable with the wording of the recommendations and believed another Special Council meeting could be called this week that would detail and tighten the City's action plan in the looming emergency situation.
Boy was I wrong! I regret my no vote to the first recommendation and realize the closure of the recreation and community centres was timely and necessary, and would like to say how much I appreciate my fellow Council members whose yes votes prevailed, Bob Chapman, Derek Giberson, Jane Hurst, Rick Kerr and Brad Marks.
More needs to be organized by the City of Oshawa and Region of Durham to ensure the next few weeks go as smoothly as possible and no one is left behind. The time is now to embrace (without touching) Dr. Tam's missive : 'do your part'!
