Durham Outlook for the Needy, operating as St. Vincent's Pallotti kitchen and store, opened to feed the needy in Oshawa 30 years ago. Although it closed during COVID last spring and sold it's building at 51 King St. E. later in 2020, for the past decade it had been planning to open in a new assessible facility in the downtown.
The property at 221 Simcoe St. was purchased in 2014. Although there were difficulties due to a problematic environmental assessment that caused an unfortunate construction delay, the soil eventually was remediated. At the same time a generous local contractor J.J. McGuire stepped up to put in the foundation.
This summer the steel was delivered and crews are now working seriously to complete the project as soon as possible!
Below are a couple pictures I snapped today, and a copy of the design rendering. Check out the Durham Outlook For the Needy website for more information about volunteering and to donate towards the grand opening and future operations!
