At the end of the 2nd week at Camp Samac the program sounds like it's doing quite well. Durham Health and Social Services Commissioner Stella Danos-Papaconstantinou who is the main organizer behind this community group supported initiative, said how many appreciate the very peaceful setting.

Clearly t
he interest in this program is strong. The total number of unsheltered individuals occupying Camp Samac for the In/Out of the Crisis (IOTC) Program, which opened May 1st, is near the 25 people that the Region indicates it will not exceed. There are measures in place to provide adequate shelter for physical distancing while providing necessary supports to residents that do not have shelter during the pandemic. The IOTC Program provides meals, staffing supports, programming and outdoor space to help individuals feel safe and secure. Here is a link to the latest info that is on the Region's website about how Camp Samac is being used to support the homeless from Oshawa and Ajax: https://www.durham.ca/en/regional-government/camp-samac-supporting-unsheltered-residents.aspx#How-is-Camp-Samac-being-used-to-support-homeless-residents
