Today I learned details about the letter the Region of Durham Social Services department, (Oshawa Regional Councillor Chapman Committee Chair) sent out to Oshawa residents and businesses in the area of Camp Samac.
Camp Samac is now where the Region, with community partners, has chosen to help support Oshawa and Ajax's vulnerable population experiencing homelessness during the coronavirus pandemic. The Region will be opening a part of Camp Samac starting this Friday, May 1st.
The Region's 'Dear Residents' letter reads:
"Kitchie Lodge has been chosen as a temporary location to relocate two existing warming stations, one located in Oshawa and one in Ajax. These facilities were not suitable to maintain appropriate physical distancing for both clients and staff. In order to improve physical distancing, the Lodge, which can normally sleep 80 individuals, will be restricted to no more than 40.
• No tents will be permitted on the site. Additional barriers have been installed to restrict access to the broader camp area.
• The site will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and additional security has been secured.
• Emergency responders have reviewed the area and buildings to ensure adequate access and compliance with fire code.
• A variety of supports will be provided to clients to encourage them to remain at the site to comply with public health guidelines to restrict non-essential travel."
Any questions can be directed to the Region of Durham: Erin Valant, Program Manager at 905-668-7711 ext. 2484.
