Check out how Metrolinx is modernizing the Transit PRESTO payment service!
Customers can continue using their PRESTO card OR WILL ABLE TO USE THEIR CREDIT CARD, DEBIT CARD or SMART WATCH OR SMART PHONE TAP for fare payment services!
Here's the promotional video which describes it as an alternative, not a replacement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGW02fQDP-U
The first phase of implementation starts today with a pilot for credit use on the Union Pearson UP Express. (The debit card function will be available later this spring.)
Metrolinx calls this a significant customer milestone, part of its plan to improve the customer experience and boost transit recovery. It writes that it is "looking forward to bringing this experience to your region".
The payment enhancement options are part the Metrolinx plan to improve the customer experience.
In addition to this new effort to give priority to "the delivery of more convenient, contactless payment options", in the past year Metrolinx has:
i) Accelerated the E-Tickets App with integrated journey planning on Durham Region Transit and Hamilton Street Railway;
ii) Removed the 25 cent overdraft fee;
iii) Provided immediate balance protection for registered PRESTO users;
iv) Reduced the minimum card load on the PRESTO website and App from $10 to 5 cents.
