August 1st is EMANCIPATION DAY. At its June 21, 2021 meeting Council unanimously passed my motion to adopt the naming of August 1st as Emancipation Day:
Whereas the British parliament prohibited enslavement, effective August 1, 1834; and
Whereas in 2008, Ontario moved to recognize August 1 as Emancipation Day; and,
Whereas on March 24, 2021 Canada’s Federal Government in the House of Commons voted unanimously to designate August 1 as Emancipation Day across Canada;
Therefore the City of Oshawa adopts naming August 1 Emancipation Day in time for August 1, 2021.
