I have a motion on Monday's Development Services Committee meeting Agenda that I am very serious about.
TIME TO SAY OF COURSE! CHANGE HAS TO START SOMEWHERE...LET'S START WITH A NEW ACCESSIBILITY GRANT PROGRAM
Of course we can improve accessibility in our homes, our apartment building, our subdivision, our CITY!
DS-21-206
Whereas the City of Oshawa is dedicated to removing barriers and improving accessibility for its residents and businesses; and,
Whereas the City has a grant program for accessibility improvements limited to the Downtown Urban Growth Center Community Improvement Plan; and,
Whereas other municipalities has a separate city-wide accessibility grant program;
Now therefore the city staff investigate a new program to revise the current accessibility grant program that will inspire improved accessibility city-wide;
Have you seen that many of the older apartment buildings in the City have no power door? No ramp?
Do you notice how older adults and people with disabilities live in some of these apartments and cant afford to move or are in poor health to move but have increasing need for accessibility?
How about all those people who renovate their homes to add an accessory apartment to rent out...how many do you think are making them accessible? Why not?
How could anyone miss how important it is to make a bathroom accessible, when you have a mother, father, friend who needs a walker for stability, or is in a mobility device and the device can't pass through the narrow bathroom door?
New built homes too, why wouldn't builders make an accessible washroom standard?
TIME TO SAY OF COURSE TO A NEW OSHAWA ACCESSIBILITY GRANT PROGRAM
Time to inspire improved accessibility city-wide!
