Today Saturday August 14th starting at 10 a.m. is one of the City's downtown Oshawa community clean-up events organized by the Mayor's Task Force on Community Safety, Security and Well Being.
Then next two will be:
Saturday, September 18 at 10:00 a.m.
Saturday, October 16 at 10:00 a.m.
More information is on the City's webpage here https://www.oshawa.ca/things-to-do/Community-Clean-Up.asp
I took these pictures earlier this week and emailed City Operations to pick up the debris (under the King St. W. bridge south east side). They replied they would be on it right away, which is good because it seems there may be needles included in the litter.
Last month Michael Sprague posted on Facebook pictures showing before and after pictures when he cleaned up this same area, but it didn't seem to last long before the mess returned.
When I took these pictures there were a couple people cooking drugs under the bridge.
Open air illegal drug use is a growing problem in downtown Oshawa.
Many emails complaints with pictures have been coming to Council in the past weeks about the open drug use and other issues related to homelessness, mental health and drug addition. Residents and businesses have serious concerns and want the City to have SOMETHING DONE IN 2021.
In recent emails and conversations I have expressed my disappointment that a Special Council meeting has not yet been called this summer.
It takes the Mayor or 6 members of Council to call a Special Council meeting.
It goes without saying change requires action. I strongly support timely action to avert the downward slide.
Confidence in heart of the City of Oshawa needs to be restored. With the post COVID-19 restart especially, people need to believe and see downtown Oshawa is a Safe, Clean and Vibrant place.
