There were questions, comments and concerns expressed by many during at the Corporate Services Committee meeting Oct 4, 2021 both during the delegation and later in the meeting when the 10 page Report CORP-21-48 Coyotes in the City of Oshawa was reviewed with questions and comments to Staff.
The delegation was the father of the young child who suffered a Coyote bite July 1st, 2021 in Northway Court Park. 922 Oshawa Blvd.N. He spoke looking for more action.
Before the report was approved Councillor Neal added an amendment that the school boards be advised and consulted on the Report.
I asked whether the City is able to request tagging of coyotes and whether the City has the ability to cull coyotes. The Commissioner of Corporate Services said it could be investigated (See video clip below.)
At the end of the meeting, under New Business, Councillor Hurst, added the following additional three part motion which Councillor Nicholson referred to the Report CORP-21-48 :
1. Consult with a wildlife specialist, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Services and Durham Regional Police Services on any wildlife issue that poses a threat and risk to human life and safety, and in particular, wildlife that interact with humans in a persistent and unprovoked manner (i.e. biting/attacking).
2. Consult with other municipalities from time to time on their best practices.
3. Consult with and retain as necessary a professionally qualified licensed trapper or hunter.
