Simcoe St. N of the University has been under construction a considerable time now for the Region of Durham's road widening project.
Back when the project was being scoped at the Region I recall in 2014, long before I was on Council, that the City of Oshawa approved contributing to the $500K the Region was budgeting to include a treed median.
When the contract was awarded in 2019 I called the Region Works Department to make sure this was still to be included, since it did not appear in the Public Notice description of the upcoming project. They answered back yes the treed median was part of the project.
As I drive this section regularly I was a bit disappointed the planned median seemed very short and narrow. Then Thursday this week I noticed machines tearing up asphalt just south of the Winchester Rd. intersection, opposite the new Riocan plaza and thought darn this newly paved section will look like a patchwork quilt when it is repaved.
Turns out there is no worry about that, however, because I've learned the pavement being removed is where, for some reason, they missed installing more of the centre median. Good they found this out now!
