Over the past few days I have received several phone calls about a flyer being circulated concerning the Region's plan for an anaerobic digestion facility in Clarington.
Then one came in my mailbox!
Whoever is behind this glossy, color, 8 1/2" x 11" flyer printed on both sides, 'Dirty Deed Done Again -Stink Plant' mail-out, and created the oshawaair.com website, is spreading inaccurate and misleading information. I would like to know if they have a financial interest in spreading this information...if they have ties with a competitor project builder.
For some reason, the anonymous players behind this propaganda seem to have spent quite a bit of money mailing it to most of the 5 wards in the City of Oshawa, When people phoned me about the flyer I explained how it is incorrect, then asked them where in Oshawa they live. So far, I can confirm it has been mailed to Wards 5, 4, 3 and 1.
I am not a Regional Councillor. As a CITY Councillor I have NO vote on the Region's plan for an anaerobic digester plant. But the people spinning the false message chose to ignore this fact, and named me, with my phone number, in the flyer and on the oshawaair.com website, as being a supporter of this plant.
Ridiculous. This matter has not come before the City of Oshawa Council. It is a Region of Durham Council matter. The 'upper tier' Region has jurisdiction over broader based services than the 'lower tier' local municipalities (which include the 5 lakeshore municipalities-Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, and the 3 townships-Brock, Uxbridge, Scugog).
Those behind the misinformation don't seem to understand the distinction of services between the upper tier Region of Durham municipal government and its 8 member lower tier municipal governments (the 5 lake shore municipalities Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa and Clarington, and the 3 townships Brock, Uxbridge and Scugog).
Below are the facts about who voted yes to the Region of Durham's plan to spend millions on an anaerobic digestion facility in Clarington.
Of the 29 member Region of Durham Council: -the breakdown is: of Oshawa's 6 REGIONAL Councillors 5 Oshawa Regional Councillors (Oshawa Mayor Carter and Regional Councillors Chapman, Kerr, Marimpietri, Nicholson) voted YES and 1 Oshawa Regional Councillor (Neal) voted NO. There were 4 other No votes from 3 Clarington Councillors (including Clarington Mayor Foster); 2 Ajax Councillors (including Ajax Mayor Collier) and one Pickering Councillor. There was one absent member and 21 Regional Council members voted YES, including the 5 Oshawa Regional Councillors (as described above).
These pages are from the May 27 Region Council meeting minutes when the vote was taken.
