Regarding concerns about increasing levels of road traffic noise, yesterday's Toronto Star article by Ilya Banares quotes Toronto Mayor John Tory as saying "this has become a much more widespread problem affecting quality of life for residents and visitors alike,” He has written to the City of Toronto's Municipal By-law Enforcement Department that: “It is disturbing people in their homes, during the day and at night, it is disrupting business and it is having a negative impact on tourists, all in the apparent cause of feeding the egos of inconsiderate people.” and asks them to "look into having bylaw officers take on a “greater role” in enforcing excessive noise rules, rather than relying on “busy” police officers."
In the past couple years I have spoken with Oshawa's former Director of Planning (now Commission of Economic Development) about some of my neighbours' concerns regarding the noise from trucks using jake brakes on Simcoe St. N. of Columbus Rd., and recently, on July 10th Oshawa resident William Sheppard wrote an excellent letter and made a delegation at Durham Region Police Services Board asking the Region and City to address traffic noise issues. A copy of his letter was forwarded to Oshawa Council on July 18th and hopefully one of Oshawa's current members of council will see it placed on an upcoming Oshawa Standing Committee meeting (they have until tomorrow September 5th to pull it from the July Information Package and add it to an Agenda) I would support Council taking initiative on this and would like to thank Mr. Sheppard for taking the time to raise the issue!
