At the Monday February 22nd Council meeting there will be a number of interesting, albeit controversial decisions for Council to make. I would like to hear Oshawa residents and business owners response to this particular matter concerning a variance to the City sign by-law to allow 2 TV advertisement screens on a downtown building.
When Development Services Committee voted on this matter this past Monday the first two votes split 3-3 and as a tie vote fails, the final vote that passed was to send it to Council without a recommendation.
It will be interesting to see the direction the 11 member Oshawa Council takes on the matter of whether the building owner at the north east corner of Simcoe St. and Athol St. will be permitted a sign variance to allow the installation of two video screens on the south angled wall of his building.
I voted not to deny the tv advertisement screens although I am seeking more particulars. Imo they would make that particular entrance to the downtown more lively, and I see the benefits of raising awareness of many local events and news items. So I made a motion to refer it back to staff to answer some questions related to the Ontario Building Code. The tie vote to refer it to staff was Yes: McConkey, Carter and Kerr, No: Chapman, Hurst Marimpietri
The votes to deny the video screens were Chapman, Hurst, Marimpietri; not to deny were McConkey, Carter, Kerr.
I am interested in hearing public opinion on this matter. See Report DS-21-16 for details http://app.oshawa.ca/.../2021/02-08/REPORT_DS-21-16.pdf Please feel free to email me with any comments, suggestions or concerns. Thanks!
