REFERENDUM QUESTION: the City has an opportunity to have a referendum question on the ballot for the 2022 municipal election. Council will decide at the meeting this Monday Dec 13, 2021 whether to follow up on last month's Notice of Motion if "a Special Meeting of Council be held in January 2022 to consider questions Council and staff may determine beneficial to place on the ballot to Oshawa residents."
What is your opinion? Do you have suggestions for a pertinent Referendum Question for Oshawans to have a Yes or No say on?
Some suggestions below...do you have any?
1. telephone/electronic voting for the Oshawa 2026 election?
2. have Council meetings return to the 6:00 pm. start time rather than current 9:30 a.m. time?
3. lowering the speed limit to 40KM on all neighbourhood streets?
4. approve temporary speed cushions as a traffic calming measure?
5. City purchase available MTO surplus Hwy 407E lands for competitive sports fields/complex, with tennis dome, cricket field, outdoor refrigerated ice rink/trails?
6. change the city flower from a rose to a peony?
Ha! I tossed in #6 because it actually is an item on Monday's Council agenda. At the last Community Services Committee meeting of the councillors suggested changing it, as an add-on during the discussion about applying to have Oshawa named as a Flower Friendly City.
I don't know if I need to make a declaration of interest because rose is in my name although Oshawa has a lovely peony garden, I am not particularly keen on the proposed change from rose to peony.
Fyi, the rose was named the City's flower in 1953 and in 1973 the City held an Oshawa Flag design contest open to the public for Oshawa’s Golden Anniversary in 1974. A public school student, won the contest. The flag has a royal blue background, with the City crest in the centre, encircled by two rows of flower petals to depict the rose, Oshawa’s flower.
